Kankaria Lake

Kankaria Lake

About this place

Kankaria Lake is the largest lake in Ahmedabad and has been developed into a full-fledged recreation hub, especially popular with families. The circular lake is ringed by a well-designed promenade that hosts a zoo, Kids City, toy train, amusement rides, boating facilities, food courts and landscaped gardens. In the evenings, the area comes alive with lights, music, street snacks and cheerful crowds, creating a mini carnival atmosphere. The lakefront is clean, walkable and safe, making it ideal for picnics, morning walks or relaxed sunset visits. During the annual Kankaria Carnival, cultural performances, exhibitions and special events attract visitors from across the city and beyond. Well-managed ticketing and zoning help keep the experience organised despite the high footfall. For travellers, it is an easy “one stop” for entertainment if they are looking for something lighter alongside heritage and museums.

History & highlights

Kankaria is an artificial lake originally built in the 15th century during the Gujarat Sultanate as a water reservoir and leisure space. Over time, it served as a key civic water body and open area for the growing city. In the 2000s, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation undertook a major redevelopment of the entire lakefront, adding modern promenades, attractions and lighting while stabilising the edges and cleaning the water. The Kankaria Carnival was introduced to celebrate the transformation and has since become an annual city-level festival.
