Sultanpur National Park

Sultanpur National Park

About this place

Sultanpur National Park is a protected wetland and one of North India’s best-known birding sites, featuring shallow marshes, open water, and grassy edges. A circular trail with watchtowers lets visitors observe hundreds of resident and migratory birds—storks, pelicans, geese, flamingos, and many more—especially in winter. Its proximity to Gurugram and Delhi makes it a peaceful, green escape from the NCR’s urban pace.

History & highlights

The area was once a natural jheel in the Sultanpur village region. It gained recognition when bird watcher Peter Scott highlighted its importance, leading to protection as a bird sanctuary in 1972 and later notification as a National Park in the early 1990s. After its designation as a Ramsar wetland, the site has been actively managed for habitat conservation, with regulations on construction and tourism to protect migratory routes that connect Central Asia and Europe to the Indian subcontinent.
