Karna Lake

Karna Lake

About this place

Karna Lake is a popular highway tourism stop on NH-44 near Karnal, offering a large man-made lake with boating, green lawns, and picnic areas. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, guest accommodation and a small children’s play area, it is designed as a relaxing break point for travellers between Delhi and Chandigarh while also serving as a local recreation spot.

History & highlights

The lake takes its name from Karna, the famed warrior of the Mahabharata, who is believed in local lore to have donated his protective armour and earrings (kavach-kundal) here to Indra. Though the current water body is a modern tourism project developed by Haryana Tourism, it consciously uses these mythological associations to brand Karnal as “Karno ka Kila” region and attract pilgrims and tourists. Over the last few decades the complex has been expanded with motels and facilities, integrating mythology with contemporary highway tourism.
