Gurudwara Manji Sahib

About this place

Gurudwara Manji Sahib in Ambala Cantonment is one of the district’s key Sikh shrines, known for its serene white domes, central prayer hall, and sarovar/baoli (stepwell) that also features in Haryana’s stepwell heritage lists. The gurdwara complex sees a steady flow of devotees, particularly during major Sikh festivals, and is often visited by travellers because Ambala is a major road and rail junction.

History & highlights

Historical records describe three important gurdwaras in the Ambala area—Badshahi Bagh, Sis Ganj, and Manji Sahib—each linked to visits of Sikh Gurus. Manji Sahib is associated with the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, who is believed to have camped in this region; later the site developed into a formal shrine with a baoli to serve pilgrims. Over time, Ambala grew into a major cantonment town under British rule and later an important junction city, making Manji Sahib a visible symbol of Sikh heritage within Haryana’s transport corridor.
