Kalesar National Park is a dense sal forest landscape in the Shivalik foothills, known for elephants, leopards, deer, and rich birdlife. The park’s rolling hills, ravines and forest tracks offer a wild, relatively less commercialised experience compared to many other parks. It forms part of an important wildlife corridor connecting Rajaji National Park (Uttarakhand) and Simbalbara National Park (Himachal Pradesh).
About this place
History & highlights
The adjoining Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary was notified in 1996, and the area was upgraded to National Park status in 2003 to strengthen protection. The park lies between 30°18′–30°28′ N latitude and 77°26′–77°36′ E longitude in Yamunanagar district, with the Yamuna forming its eastern boundary and the main Shivalik ridge to the north. Historically, British officers and local rulers hunted tigers here, leading to a sharp decline in big cats by the early 20th century; today, conservation efforts aim to preserve and restore this crucial habitat, though recent controversies over river embankment construction highlight ongoing environmental pressures.
