Dandi Kutir (Salt Mount) Museum

Dandi Kutir (Salt Mount) Museum

About this place

Dandi Kutir is a striking, mound-shaped museum dedicated entirely to the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi. Seen from outside, it resembles a giant salt mound, symbolising the Dandi Salt March and Gandhi’s use of salt as a simple yet powerful symbol against colonial rule. Inside, immersive galleries use films, projections, dioramas, interactive displays and soundscapes to narrate his journey from childhood to the freedom struggle. The storytelling is modern and multimedia-heavy, designed to keep both students and adults engaged while highlighting themes like non-violence, truth, equality and self-reliance. Located next to Mahatma Mandir, the museum is fully air-conditioned and well organised, making it comfortable for long visits. For many travellers, it is one of the most impressive Gandhi museums in India, combining strong content with contemporary exhibition design.

History & highlights

Dandi Kutir is promoted as India’s largest museum focused on a single individual. It was developed by the Government of Gujarat in the 2010s alongside the Mahatma Mandir convention complex as part of a broader effort to showcase Gandhi’s legacy in the state where his political journey began. The salt-mound form and interior concept draw directly from the 1930 Dandi March, when Gandhi walked from Sabarmati to the coastal village of Dandi to break the salt law. Since opening, the museum has hosted countless school groups, officials and tourists, reinforcing Gandhian ideas in a 21st-century format.
