Punit Van

Punit Van

About this place

Punit Van is a themed botanical garden in Sector 19 of Gandhinagar where trees and plants are organised according to concepts from Indian astrology and mythology. The garden is divided into zones such as Nakshatra Van, Rashi Van, Navgraha Van and Panchvati Van, each associated with specific stars, signs, planets or sacred groves. This creative layout turns a simple park into a learning space where visitors discover how different species are linked to deities, zodiac signs and traditional beliefs. Well-laid paths, labelled trees and quiet corners make it a pleasant place for walks and nature appreciation. For photographers and plant lovers, the combination of greenery, themed sections and open sky gives many interesting frames, especially in early morning or late afternoon light.

History & highlights

Punit Van was developed in 2005 by the Forest Department of the Government of Gujarat as a “holy forest”, with about 3,500 trees planted according to astrological significance. The idea was to promote both environmental awareness and cultural connection to trees by linking plantation to traditional concepts of nakshatras and grahas. Since its opening, it has been promoted as a prime tourist and educational attraction in Gandhinagar and is used for nature education programmes, school visits and public walks tied to environment days.
