Lakshmi Vilas Palace

Lakshmi Vilas Palace

About this place

Lakshmi Vilas Palace is the signature landmark of Vadodara and one of the grandest royal residences in India. Spread over more than 500 acres, this Indo-Saracenic palace complex is still the home of the Gaekwad royal family. The exterior blends domes, towers and arches in a style that combines European, Mughal and Hindu elements, while the interiors feature ornate halls, stained glass, marble, rich mosaics and royal portraits. The estate also includes a golf course, landscaped grounds and heritage buildings used for events. Parts of the palace and the on-site museum are open to visitors, who can walk through the Darbar Hall, admire art and weapon collections, and get a feel of Baroda’s royal past. For travellers, it is both an architectural highlight and a window into the cultural vision of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

History & highlights

The palace was commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and completed in 1890, replacing earlier royal residences of the Baroda State. Designed in the Indo-Saracenic Revival style, it was reputedly the largest private residence of its time, fitted with modern amenities such as elevators and extensive services. The palace symbolised the ruler’s ambition to present Baroda as a progressive, well-governed princely state comparable to European capitals. Over time, parts of the estate have been adapted for a museum, banquets and public events, while the core remains the royal family’s residence, carefully maintained as a living heritage property.
