Uparkot Fort

Uparkot Fort

About this place

Uparkot Fort is Junagadh’s hilltop citadel, rising high above the old city with thick stone walls, ancient gateways and sweeping views towards Girnar. Inside the complex you can explore ruined ramparts, old cannons, rock-cut Buddhist caves, the Jama Masjid, and the famous stepwells Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo carved deep into rock. Narrow staircases, shady courtyards and viewpoints make it easy to spend a relaxed half-day just wandering and taking photos. From the top, Junagadh’s lanes and domes spread out below, while in the distance Girnar Hill rises like a dark green wall. For Ghoomein, Uparkot is the core “old Junagadh experience” – combine it with nearby markets and street food for a full heritage walk.

History & highlights

A fortified settlement existed here from Mauryan times; tradition links the early fort to Chandragupta Maurya around 319 BCE. Over centuries it passed through Gupta, Chudasama and other dynasties, was buried and rediscovered around 976 CE, then repeatedly rebuilt. Inscriptions of Mandalika III (15th century) and later structures like the Jumma Masjid and cannons show how different rulers left their mark. Today Uparkot is protected as a major heritage monument and is one of Gujarat’s most atmospheric historic forts.
