Bright End Corner

Bright End Corner

About this place

Bright End Corner is a famous sunrise and sunset point about 2 km from central Almora, at the end of the town’s ridge. From this bend in the road, visitors can see long stretches of the Himalayan range, especially on clear days when peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul and Panchachuli glow at dawn or dusk. Pine and oak trees surround the viewpoint, and the air is usually crisp and quiet, making it ideal for short walks, photography and moments of reflection. Nearby are the Vivekananda Library, Vivekananda Memorial and Ramakrishna Kutir, adding a spiritual and educational dimension to the place.

History & highlights

Bright End Corner marks the start of Mall Road and has long been a natural stopping place for travellers coming into Almora. It is believed that Swami Vivekananda stayed and meditated here during his visit to Almora in the late 19th century, and the memorials around the area preserve that association. The name itself comes from a British officer, Mr. Brighton, from the colonial period. Over decades, as Almora grew, the spot remained relatively uncluttered and continued to be promoted as the best place to experience sunrise, sunset and even moonrise over the mountains. Today Bright End Corner symbolises Almora’s combination of natural beauty, colonial and spiritual history, and is featured in almost every tourist list for the town.
