Gaurikund (Hot Springs And Gauri Temple)

About this place

Gaurikund is the last motorable stop on the classic Kedarnath route and the starting point of the traditional trek. Tucked in a steep valley, it is known for its natural hot water spring where pilgrims bathe before beginning the yatra, and for a small temple dedicated to Goddess Gauri (Parvati). The contrast of steaming pools, cold mountain air, and the roar of the Mandakini river creates a powerful transition zone between the lower valleys and the high shrine. Shops, dharamshalas and pony stands line the narrow streets, but the spiritual mood stays strong as almost everyone you see is a pilgrim preparing for the climb.

History & highlights

Mythology says that Parvati performed intense penance at Gaurikund to win Shiva as her husband; hence the name “Gauri’s Kund”. Over centuries this spot became part of the Kedarnath circuit: pilgrims first purify themselves in the kund and visit the Gauri temple, then proceed upwards. The hot spring has long been believed to have healing properties. Modern travel sources describe Gaurikund as both a religious tirth and a historic base camp that has seen generations of sadhus, rajas, British explorers and now lakhs of yatris pass through on their way to Baba Kedarnath.
