Kartik Swami Temple (Kanakchauri)

Kartik Swami Temple (Kanakchauri)

About this place

Kartik Swami Temple is perched on a narrow ridge near Kanakchauri village, offering one of the most stunning viewpoints in Rudraprayag. Dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (Murugan), the elder son of Shiva, it is reached by a 3 km trek through pine and rhododendron forest. At the top, a small stone temple stands almost alone on the ridge, with rows of bells and colourful flags fluttering in the wind. From here you get a grand sweep of Himalayan peaks and deep valleys on both sides, making it a favourite place for sunrise, sunset and stargazing.

History & highlights

Mythology says that Shiva once challenged his sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, to a race around the universe. Kartikeya set off on his peacock, but Ganesha simply circled his parents, declaring them his universe, and was thus rewarded. In some versions, the humbled Kartikeya retreated to the mountains in tapasya, and the Rudraprayag temple is associated with this penance. While exact historical dates are unclear, the shrine is considered one of the very few Kartikeya temples in Uttarakhand and has grown in popularity as trekking and social media have highlighted its dramatic location. State tourism now lists it as a signature viewpoint-temple of Rudraprayag.
