Deoria Tal is a high-altitude lake situated at about 2,438 m near Sari village on the Ukhimath–Chopta road. The water body is ringed by dense forest, and on clear days it perfectly reflects the snow-covered Chaukhamba and other peaks, creating one of the most iconic mirror-lake views in Garhwal. A 2–3 km trek from Sari leads you to the lake, where meadows, camping spots and silence encourage long stays. It is popular for night camping, photography, star-gazing and as the first acclimatisation leg of the Deoria Tal–Chandrashila trek.
About this place
History & highlights
Deoria Tal is mentioned in mythology as the lake where the Yaksha questioned the Pandavas in the Mahabharata, testing their wisdom before reviving them—hence its association with dharma and inner reflection. Historically, the lake has served as a grazing and water point for local villagers and shepherds, but with the growth of trekking, it has become a key eco-tourism site within Rudraprayag district. Government and trekking organisations now promote it as a model for low-impact tourism, with rules about camping zones and waste management so that its crystal-clear reflections and surrounding forest remain pristine for future visitors.
