Gartang Gali And Nelong Valley

Gartang Gali And Nelong Valley

About this place

Gartang Gali And Nelong Valley is a dramatic wooden staircase-path clinging to a vertical rock face in the Nelong valley region of Uttarkashi, close to the Indo–China border. Once a vital section of a trans-Himalayan trade route, the restored walkway now allows visitors (in limited numbers) to walk above a deep gorge, with sheer cliffs and the Jadh Ganga river far below. The landscape is rugged and semi-barren, very different from the greener Bhagirathi and Yamuna valleys, giving a glimpse of Tibet-like terrain within India. Entry is restricted and regulated by permits, which adds to the sense of adventure.

History & highlights

Historically, this path formed part of the old trade and pilgrimage route connecting Uttarkashi with Tibet through Nelong valley, used by the Bhotiya/Jadh traders carrying salt, wool and other goods on yaks and mules. After the 1962 India–China conflict, the border was sealed and the route closed for decades due to security concerns. Recently, the government and local administration have carefully reopened Gartang Gali for controlled heritage tourism, repairing the wooden structure and setting strict rules on visitor numbers and photography. This has turned a forgotten relic of cross-border trade into a signature attraction that tells the story of Uttarkashi’s frontier history while highlighting both its strategic and cultural importance.
