Shankar Math and Vishnu Mohini Temple

About this place

Shankar Math and Vishnu Mohini Temple or Ashwatirth, is located near the SSB complex and close to Baba Gorakhnath Cave. The temple is unique because it houses idols of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Shiva together, reflecting the harmony of different streams of worship. The setting, on a rise above the Alaknanda, offers a quiet view of the river and the surrounding hills, making it a serene meditation spot and an important stop for spiritually inclined visitors to Srinagar.

History & highlights

The site is associated in local lore with the Ashwamedha Yajna of Indra and is thus called Ashwatirth in some texts. Tradition links its foundation to Adi Shankaracharya, while later sources say a Garhwal official named Shankar Dobhal played a key role in building or restoring the present structure—hence the name Shankar Math. Over time it came to be known as Vishnu Mohini Temple because the main deity is a special form of Vishnu without the Sudarshan chakra, with Lakshmi and Shiva also enshrined. The combination of Shaiva and Vaishnava elements, plus its position opposite Gorakhnath’s cave, makes the temple an important symbol of Srinagar’s multi-tradition spiritual heritage.
