Baba Gorakhnath Cave is a small but highly revered cave-temple dedicated to the great yogi Guru Gorakhnath, situated a short distance from the main town on the slopes above the Alaknanda. The entrance is low and narrow, so visitors literally bow and crawl in, heightening the feeling of humility and retreat. Inside, the cave is simple, with a small shrine and places where devotees sit for meditation. The spot is surrounded by quiet forested slopes, giving it a powerful yogic ambience away from city noise.
About this place
History & highlights
Historical and local accounts agree that Srinagar was once a major spiritual centre of the Nath sect, and this cave is considered the central tirtha of the Nath Panth in central Garhwal. Tradition holds that Guru Gorakhnath practised intense tapasya here, taught his disciples the path of Hatha Yoga and ultimately took samadhi at or near this site. Over centuries, Nath yogis and local devotees have kept the cave alive through daily worship and periodic gatherings. Today pilgrims come to seek blessings, meditate in silence and then often continue to neighbouring shrines like Shankar Math, Keshorai Math and Kamleshwar Mahadev, making this cave an anchor point of Srinagar’s spiritual circuit.
