Chandrabadni Temple

About this place

Chandrabadni Temple is a powerful Shakti Peeth located on top of Chandrabadni / Chandrakoot mountain, on the Devprayag–New Tehri road. From its height of around 2,277 m, the temple offers a 360-degree panorama of Garhwal hills and distant Himalayan peaks such as Kedarnath and Badrinath on clear days. The shrine itself is modest – a stone temple crowned by flags and a brass kalash – but the courtyard is filled with trishuls, bells and offerings left by devotees. Unlike many goddess temples, Chandrabadni has no anthropomorphic idol; instead, worship centres on a Sri-Yantra carved on a flat stone, which is carefully covered by a cloth canopy during special rituals. Though administratively in Tehri district, it is marketed as a major excursion from Devprayag, and many pilgrims include it in their Devprayag darshan circuit.

History & highlights

Legend links Chandrabadni to the story of Goddess Sati, whose body parts fell at different places while Lord Shiva wandered with her burned corpse; this hill is said to be where her torso and weapons fell, making it a Shakti Peeth. Because of this, the temple is regarded as extremely potent for blessings of protection and courage. Instead of an idol, the ancient Sri-Yantra on stone is worshipped, and priests are traditionally blindfolded while tying the ritual canopy over it, emphasising faith over direct sight. A large fair is held every year in April, drawing villagers from around Devprayag and Tehri for worship, feasting and trade. Over time, Chandrabadni has become both a devotional centre and a scenic trek destination, symbolising the strong Shakta heritage that complements Devprayag’s Vaishnav and Shaiva traditions.
