Teen Dhara

About this place

Teen Dhara is a well-known resting point on the Rishikesh–Devprayag–Badrinath highway (NH 58), about 9–10 km from Devprayag towards Rishikesh. The name literally means “three streams”, referring to the small natural water springs that emerge here from the hillside. The spot overlooks the Ganga as she flows downstream from Devprayag, with roadside viewpoints, trees and fresh mountain air. Over time, a cluster of dhabas and eateries has grown up around the springs, making it a favourite halt for bus travellers, bikers and pilgrims looking for chai, simple Garhwali food and a view. The constant sound of water – both from the river and from the three dharas – gives the place a soothing, refreshing character.

History & highlights

Teen Dhara started simply as a natural spring and shaded bend in the road, where travellers on the old hill route would rest their animals and refill water. With the building and later widening of the national highway, it evolved into a recognised roadside station, now listed in official and private travel guides as a recommended break point between Rishikesh and Devprayag. While it is not a temple, many locals consider the springs themselves to be sacred manifestations of the hills’ life-giving waters, and some travellers treat a sip here almost like tirtha water. In the broader Devprayag circuit, Teen Dhara represents the everyday side of pilgrimage – the dhabas, resting spots and informal viewpoints that support the spiritual journey to the holy confluence.
