India / Uttarakhand

Chamoli is a historically rich district of Uttarakhand, known for its spiritual heritage, brave warriors, and deep connection with nature. The region has ancient roots and is closely associated with the Garhwal Kingdom, which was founded by King Kanak Pal of the Panwar dynasty around the 9th century. For centuries, Chamoli remained an important part of Garhwal, protecting Himalayan routes and preserving mountain traditions.

Chamoli holds immense religious significance as it is home to the sacred shrine of Badrinath, one of the चार धाम (Char Dham) pilgrimage sites of Hinduism. According to legends, Lord Vishnu meditated here, making the region a major spiritual center since ancient times. The area also witnessed the impact of the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816), after which parts of Garhwal came under British administration.

After India’s independence, Chamoli became part of Uttar Pradesh and later emerged as a key district of the newly formed state of Uttarakhand in 2000. The district gained global recognition in the 1970s due to the famous Chipko Movement, where villagers, especially women, protected trees from being cut, promoting environmental conservation.

Today, Chamoli is admired for its temples, valleys, glaciers, and its role in preserving Himalayan ecology and culture.
