Sulphur Pond (Hidden Sulphur Spring), Maldevta side

About this place

The Sulphur Pond (often called “gandhak ka paani” by locals) is a hidden natural spring-fed pool in the Maldevta / Ghuttu side of Dehradun valley. Short off-road walks through fields and scrub lead to a small rocky basin filled with greenish-blue water that smells faintly of sulphur. Unlike the fully developed Sahastradhara area, this pond is more raw: no big shops, limited infrastructure, just a quiet corner of nature where locals and a few explorers come to bathe or sit by the water. People believe the sulphur-rich water is good for skin issues and joint pain, so you’ll often see visitors carefully stepping into the pool, treating it like a natural spa in the middle of hills and forest.

History & highlights

The sulphur pond is part of the same geothermal and limestone belt that gives Dehradun its many springs, including Sahastradhara’s sulphur falls. For decades, villagers knew this as a local spot where warmish, mineral-rich water collected, but it was not promoted or heavily built up. In recent years, vloggers and travel groups began sharing videos titled “secret sulphur pond of Dehradun” or “hidden gandhak pool”, turning it into a minor offbeat attraction. There are no detailed written historical records; most information comes from residents who say their elders used the pond for traditional healing baths long before social media discovered it. Today, the main challenge is to keep the place clean and safe – as more people come, locals and responsible travellers talk about carrying back trash and respecting that this is essentially a fragile natural spring, not a commercial water park.
