India / Uttarakhand

Dhanaulti is a peaceful hill station in Uttarakhand, located near Mussoorie in the Tehri Garhwal district. Though today it is mainly known for tourism, its historical roots are connected to the ancient Garhwal Kingdom. For centuries, this region remained part of the territory ruled by the Panwar dynasty, which governed Garhwal before the British era. Due to its dense forests and high altitude, Dhanaulti earlier served as a quiet forest region rather than a major settlement.

During the British period, nearby Mussoorie developed as a popular summer capital, while Dhanaulti remained a calm and untouched area used mainly by forest officials and local villagers. The region became part of British Garhwal after the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816). After India’s independence, Dhanaulti became part of the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand.

In recent decades, Dhanaulti has grown into an important eco-tourism destination, famous for Deodar and Oak forests, Eco Park, and panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges. Today, Dhanaulti is known not for royal palaces or battles, but for its role in promoting nature tourism, environmental conservation, and peaceful mountain culture.
