About this place
History & highlights
The First (1526), Second (1556), and Third Battle of Panipat (1761) were all fought in this region and led to turning points in Indian politics—the establishment of the Mughal Empire under Babur, its reconsolidation under Akbar, and the weakening of Maratha power that opened the way for British expansion. Memorial building gained momentum under the British and later the Haryana government, which set up the Battles of Panipat Memorial Society and the Panipat Museum. Recently, Haryana and Maharashtra have planned a large “Shaurya Memorial” at Kala Amb to honour Maratha warriors, showing how the site continues to evolve as a place of remembrance.
