Jakhu Temple

Jakhu Temple

About this place

Jakhu Temple crowns Jakhu Hill, the highest point of Shimla, surrounded by dense deodar forest. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is famous for its huge orange Hanuman statue that rises above the trees and is visible from many parts of the town. Pilgrims reach it by a steep walk or ropeway; at the top there is a courtyard with bells, prasad stalls, monkeys and stunning views of the Himalayas and the city below. The calm forest plus temple bells make it a major spiritual and sightseeing spot.

History & highlights

Jakhu is considered an ancient Hanuman shrine linked with the Ramayana. Local belief says that when Lakshman was gravely injured in the war, Hanuman, while carrying the Sanjeevani mountain, paused on this hill; his presence sanctified the spot and a shrine was later established. Over time a small forest temple became a major pilgrimage site. During British times the ridge below turned into a colonial promenade, but Jakhu Hill stayed a devotional space. In recent years, the installation of the giant Hanuman statue and a modern ropeway has turned Jakhu into a powerful city landmark, mixing old mythology with new tourism infrastructure.
