Manu Temple (Sage Manu Temple)

About this place

Manu Temple stands above Old Manali village, reached by a steep lane and steps through traditional houses and orchards. It is one of the only temples in India dedicated to Sage Manu, regarded as the creator of humankind and the author of Manusmriti. The structure combines stone base and wooden, pagoda-style upper levels with carved pillars and balconies, typical of Kullu architecture. The temple courtyard opens to beautiful views of the Beas Valley, and the whole ascent feels like walking from the busy tourist belt into a quieter, older Himalayan village world.

History & highlights

According to local tradition, this site marks the place where Manu meditated after the great flood, having reached this valley in his boat, which is why the region is called Manu-alaya (Manali). Modern accounts say the temple is around 400 years old, first built by a local king inspired by a dream of Sage Manu, and later renovated in the 19th century by the Raja of Kullu, who added a new shrine and the pagoda-style superstructure. Over time, the temple has remained a significant pilgrimage spot for people seeking blessings for wisdom and righteous living. For Old Manali, it acts as both spiritual centre and anchor of the origin-legend that connects the town to the wider story of creation in Hindu cosmology.
