Manali Gompa And Himalayan Nyingmapa Monastery (Gadhan Thekchhokling)

About this place

Manali Gompa And Himalayan Nyingmapa Monastery.Near the bus stand and Mall Road are two important Tibetan monasteries: the Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa and the Manali Gompa (Gadhan Thekchhokling). Both are compact but beautiful, with bright murals, prayer wheels, golden roofs and large statues of Buddha in meditation. Inside, butter lamps glow and monks chant, creating pockets of calm just meters away from busy markets. Visitors can sit quietly, spin prayer wheels and observe Tibetan Buddhist rituals, making these gompas an essential part of Manali’s spiritual landscape alongside the Hindu temples.

History & highlights

Tibetan refugees arriving in Himachal after 1959 established many settlements and monastery centres. The Himalayan Nyingmapa Gompa represents the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and is noted as one of North India’s well-known monasteries, set close to Manali’s Mall Road. The Manali Gompa, or Gadhan Thekchhokling, was built in the 1960s by Tibetan refugees as both a place of worship and a symbol of cultural survival. Over time, these monasteries have become centres for community festivals, thangka painting, and teachings, while also being promoted by tourism boards as must-visit attractions. They tell the story of how Manali evolved from a purely Kullu–Himachali town into a shared space of Indian and Tibetan Himalayan cultures.
