Kalaram Temple (Panchavati)

About this place

Kalaram Temple.A prominent temple in Panchavati, built entirely from black stone and dedicated to Lord Rama. The tall shikhara, walled courtyard and carved pillars give it a strong visual presence. Devotees line up for darshan of the black-stone idols of Ram, Sita and Lakshman, and the temple is a key stop on any Panchavati walking circuit, especially during Ram Navami and other festivals.

History & highlights

The Kalaram Temple was completed in 1790 after years of construction funded by a local banker, Sardar Rangarao Odhekar. It became an important centre of Rama worship in Nashik and later a focus for social reform: in 1930, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a satyagraha here demanding entry for Dalits, linking the site to India’s anti-caste movement. Current urban projects like Ram Kal Path specifically include conservation of Kalaram and surrounding structures, underlining its historical as well as spiritual significance.
