Deekshabhoomi

About this place

Deekshabhoomi is a vast stupa complex and open ground in central Nagpur, regarded as one of the most important centres of modern Buddhism in India. A huge white dome with a meditation hall stands at the heart of landscaped lawns and pathways. Lakhs of followers gather here, especially on Dussehra, to pay homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and participate in mass Buddhist ceremonies.

History & highlights

On 14 October 1956, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and several lakh followers embraced Buddhism at this site, launching the neo-Buddhist movement among Dalits in India. Afterwards, donations from Buddhists in India and abroad funded the construction of the large stupa and complex, completed in the late 20th century. Deekshabhoomi is now a protected monument and living symbol of social justice, equality and spiritual rebirth, with Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din drawing huge crowds every year.
