New Palace (Shahu Palace) and Museum

About this place

The New Palace, built of black polished stone, is an impressive royal residence within landscaped grounds on the southern side of Kolhapur. Part of it still houses the descendants of the Kolhapur royal family, while another section has been converted into a museum displaying royal memorabilia, hunting trophies, paintings, textiles and historic photographs.

History & highlights

Constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the reign of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj and his successors, the New Palace blends Indo-Sarcenic and local styles. Shahu Maharaj is known for his pioneering social reforms, including reservations for backward classes in education. The palace and its museum showcase the material culture and political role of Kolhapur as a Maratha princely state under British suzerainty. After Integration with India, part of the palace remained royal residence while the museum opened to the public as a heritage attraction.
