Sukhna Lake

About this place

Sukhna Lake is an artificial reservoir at the foothills of the Shivaliks, forming Chandigarh’s most beautiful green–blue lung space. With a long promenade, jogging track, rowing and paddle boating, it is ideal for sunrise walks, bird-watching and evening outings. The backdrop of low hills and the proximity to Rock Garden make this area the natural recreational heart for residents of the Tricity (Chandigarh–Mohali–Panchkula).

History & highlights

Designed by Le Corbusier and his team as part of Chandigarh’s original master plan, Sukhna Lake was created in the late 1950s by damming a seasonal stream. It was meant as a “place of peace and silence” away from traffic, reinforcing the city’s modernist emphasis on open spaces and human scale. Over time, siltation and environmental concerns have led to restoration drives. The area now also anchors other attractions like the Bird Park and events, ensuring Sukhna remains central to Chandigarh’s identity and tourism.
