Qila Mubarak

About this place

Qila Mubarak is a massive brick fort rising above the old city area of Bathinda. High walls, bastions and gateways give a powerful first impression, and inside are courtyards, old structures and a gurdwara. From the ramparts, visitors can see the spread of Bathinda town and surrounding plains. It’s the key historical attraction of the city and an excellent photo spot for heritage lovers.

History & highlights

The site has very ancient roots, with references suggesting an early fort existing here for over a thousand years; it has seen Rajput, Muslim and Sikh rulers. It is one of the oldest surviving forts in Punjab, associated in tradition with figures like Razia Sultana, who is said to have been imprisoned here. Over centuries, different powers repaired and reused the fort; under the British it remained an important cantonment point. Today, as a protected monument, Qila Mubarak represents Bathinda’s long strategic importance on north India’s trade and invasion routes.
