Rock Garden.A 40-acre fantasy world of courtyards, waterfalls and thousands of human, animal and abstract figures made entirely from broken tiles, glass bangles, sanitaryware and other scrap. Narrow passages, arches and mosaic walls make it feel like a hidden city made from waste. It’s one of Chandigarh’s most iconic tourist spots and a must-visit photo location.
About this place
History & highlights
Started secretly in 1957 by roads inspector Nek Chand, who collected demolition debris from 50+ villages cleared for Chandigarh and built sculptures in a forest ravine. Authorities discovered it in the 1970s, legalised and expanded it as a public park. Today it covers about 40 acres, gets around 1.5 million visitors a year and is seen worldwide as a masterpiece of “best from waste” outsider art.
