Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake

About this place

Sukhna Lake.A large man-made lake at the foot of the Shivaliks, famous for sunrise and sunset views. It has a long walking–jogging track, rowing and paddle-boating, food stalls, children’s play areas and an overall peaceful vibe. Couples, joggers, families and tourists all treat it as Chandigarh’s outdoor living room.

History & highlights

Created in the late 1950s by damming a seasonal choe, Sukhna Lake was part of Le Corbusier’s original master plan as a place of “peace and silence” away from traffic. Over time it became the city’s main recreation zone, hosting events, regattas and morning–evening walkers. Siltation problems led to desilting and catchment treatment projects, but it remains one of the strongest symbols of the “City Beautiful.”
