Leisure Valley (chain of gardens)

About this place

Leisure Valley. An 8 km long chain of parks and gardens running north–south through the city, starting from Rajendra Park near the Capitol and ending around Sector 53. Different stretches include Rose Garden, Shanti Kunj and other themed gardens. Locals use it for walking, jogging, yoga and picnics; tourists experience it as Chandigarh’s green “spine” cutting through the grid of sectors.

History & highlights

Conceived by the city planners as the “lungs of Chandigarh,” Leisure Valley was laid out in the 1950s–60s on a former seasonal stream bed. Instead of hiding the depression, planners turned it into a continuous recreational corridor. Over decades, new garden sections and festivals (like Chrysanthemum Show at Terraced Garden) have been added, making Leisure Valley a living example of how landscape design is central to the city’s identity.
