Government Museum and Art Gallery

About this place

Government Museum.A major museum complex with collections of Gandhara sculptures, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings, medieval bronzes, textiles and modern Indian art. The building itself is a classic modernist design with large pilotis, open corridors and sculpture lawns. Nearby are the Architecture Museum and Natural History Museum, making Sector 10 a full cultural zone.

History & highlights

The collection originates from the partition of the old Lahore Museum; some objects were allotted to India and housed in the newly formed Chandigarh. The museum building, designed in the 1950s by Le Corbusier’s team, reflects the same architectural language as the Capitol. Over time the museum has expanded its galleries and educational programmes, becoming a key institution for understanding art and history in North India.
