Omkareshwar is one of the most sacred towns of Madhya Pradesh, built on and around a small island in the Narmada River that is traditionally said to be shaped like the sacred symbol “ॐ” (Om). The town’s identity is completely centred on the worship of Lord Shiva as Omkareshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. For centuries, pilgrims have crossed the river by boats and later by bridges to reach the island, perform parikrama, bathe in the Narmada and visit the twin shrines of Omkareshwar (on the island) and Mamleshwar (on the mainland).

Historically, this stretch of the Narmada lay on the cultural boundary between Malwa and the Deccan. Ancient references in Puranic literature and local legends describe Omkareshwar as an old tirtha where rishis performed tapasya and kings sought blessings before campaigns. Over time, dynasties such as the Paramaras of Malwa, later the sultans and Mughals, and then the Marathas, all patronised the temples and maths here with grants and repairs, even if the town itself never became a political capital.

In the modern era, the construction of roads, bridges and the nearby dam system made Omkareshwar more accessible. Today it is a major centre of Narmada and Shiva devotion, with continuous yatras, festivals and growing religious tourism, while still retaining the intimate, river-island character of an ancient pilgrimage town.
