Upper And Lower Lake (Bhopal) and Old City

About this place

Upper And Lower Lake.Bhopal is known as the “City of Lakes” because the old city is wrapped around the twin lakes – Upper Lake (Bhojtal) and Lower Lake. From VIP Road and Kamla Park you get wide views of water, hills and domes of mosques. On the lakes you have boating, sunset points and small islands, while the old city to the north has mosques, havelis, crowded bazaars and food lanes. The newer planned Bhopal lies to the south with broad roads, institutions and malls, giving a strong contrast between old and new.

History & highlights

Tradition says the big lake was first created in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj; the modern name “Bhojtal” honours him. Later Bhopal grew as a fortified settlement and, unusually, was ruled for long periods by a line of Begums (female rulers) in the 19th–early 20th century, who promoted modern planning, rail, education and public buildings around the lakes. After Independence Bhopal became capital of Madhya Pradesh, and the lakefront was developed with roads, parks and institutions. Today Bhojtal is a key part of Bhopal’s identity and tourism image.
