Sun Temple (Surya Mandir)

Sun Temple (Surya Mandir)

About this place

The Sun Temple in Gwalior is a striking modern temple modelled loosely on the Konark Sun Temple of Odisha. Built in red sandstone and white marble, it has a chariot-style structure with carved wheels and horses, a richly decorated inner sanctum for Surya Bhagwan, and neat lawns around it. Its clean architecture and calm atmosphere make it a popular stop for tourists after seeing the fort and palaces.

History & highlights

The temple was constructed in the 20th century by the Birla family, who also built several other prominent “Birla Mandirs” across India. Though not ancient, it reflects a modern revival of classical temple forms and is often used in tourism campaigns to represent Gwalior’s blend of old and new. As a relatively recent addition, it shows how devotional architecture continues to evolve in MP beyond its medieval sites.
