Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls

About this place

Bhedaghat & Dhuandhar Falls.Near Jabalpur, the Narmada River cuts through tall cliffs of white marble at Bhedaghat, forming a narrow gorge where boatmen row visitors between gleaming rock walls that seem to change colour in the sun and moonlight. A short distance away, the river plunges over a rocky ledge at Dhuandhar Falls, throwing up a constant spray that looks like clouds of smoke (“dhuan”), especially during monsoon. Ropeway rides, viewpoints and evening lighting make it one of central India’s most dramatic natural sights.

History & highlights

The marble rocks of Bhedaghat are part of ancient formations along the Narmada rift. Over geological time the river carved the narrow gorge, while local communities used the marble for sculpture and building. Bhedaghat has been a known scenic spot since colonial times, featuring in travelogues and films. Modern tourism infrastructure – boats, ropeway, lighting – has converted it into a signature attraction of Jabalpur, commonly paired with the city’s temples and cantonment heritage on tourist circuits.
