Omkareshwar Temple and Narmada Island

About this place

Omkareshwar Temple is a sacred island in the Narmada shaped roughly like the “Om” symbol, with the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple on one side and temples, ghats and ashrams all along the river. Stone bridges and boats connect the island to both banks. Pilgrims perform parikrama of the island, bathe in the Narmada and visit Omkareshwar and nearby Mamleshwar shrines, while the surrounding hills and water create a serene, intensely spiritual ambience.

History & highlights

Omkareshwar is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and has been a major Shaivite centre for many centuries, mentioned in Puranic texts. Various dynasties – including the Paramaras and Marathas – patronised the temples and maths here, and the Narmada’s sanctity drew ascetics and pilgrims long before modern roads existed. In recent years government projects have improved ghats, lighting and access roads, integrating Omkareshwar into MP’s booming religious tourism circuit.
