Patalkot Valley

About this place

Patalkot Valley is a deep, horseshoe-shaped valley in Chhindwara district, surrounded by steep forested hills and inhabited by Gond and Bharia tribal communities. From the viewpoints on the rim, you look down onto tiny villages, terraced fields and dense green cover. The valley feels remote and mysterious; many visitors combine it with Tamia viewpoint and nearby waterfalls, making it a niche eco-tourism and cultural experience.

History & highlights

The name “Patalkot” suggests a place so deep it connects to the netherworld (“patal”). For centuries, its geography kept the tribal villages relatively isolated, preserving traditional agriculture, herbal medicine and customs. In recent decades, government and NGOs have started eco-tourism projects and cultural festivals to create sustainable livelihoods while protecting the environment. Patalkot thus represents both the ancient, indigenous face of Madhya Pradesh and contemporary efforts to use tourism carefully to support tribal communities and conserve forests.
