Patnitop, in the Udhampur district of Jammu region, is a relatively new hill station in terms of written history, but the plateau and surrounding forests have been used for centuries as a natural rest spot on the old route between the Jammu plains and the Kashmir Valley. The name is often traced to “Pattan da talab / Top,” referring to a meadow or pond where travellers and their animals once halted, which over time evolved in pronunciation to Patnitop. Shepherds, traders and pilgrims moving towards the Pir Panjal passes are believed to have used this ridge as a summer grazing and camping ground long before it became a formal resort.
During the Dogra rule and later the British period, when the road connection between Jammu and Srinagar was improved, Patnitop began to attract attention as a cool, wooded plateau with wide views and clean air. Simple rest houses and later tourist bungalows were built, and the place slowly acquired a reputation as the Jammu region’s own small hill station.
After Independence, with the upgrading of the National Highway and tunnel projects nearby, Patnitop became much more accessible. Hotels, guest houses and adventure activities developed, turning this once quiet halting meadow into a popular getaway known for its pine forests, snow in winter and panoramic views of the Chenab valley.
