Gulmarg Meadow and Gulmarg Gondola

Gulmarg Meadow and Gulmarg Gondola

About this place

Gulmarg Meadow.Gulmarg is a high meadow ringed by dark conifer forests and snow-clad peaks. In summer it is a green bowl of wildflowers with walking and pony trails; in winter it becomes a major skiing and snow tourism hub. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, carries visitors up to Apharwat slopes for panoramic views and snow activities.

History & highlights

The area was known in earlier times as a summer grazing ground and hunting area for local rulers. The name “Gulmarg” (“meadow of flowers”) is said to have been given by the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who loved the valley’s blossoms. Under British rule it developed into a hill station with a golf course and holiday cottages for officers based in the plains. In the late 20th century, the installation of the Gondola and development of ski infrastructure turned Gulmarg into an international-level winter sports destination, while retaining its historic role as Kashmir’s classic summer meadow resort.
