Diskit Monastery Maitreya Statue, is the main town of Nubra Valley, and its monastery stands on a rocky promontory above the river, with a huge golden Maitreya Buddha statue nearby. Visitors climb up to the monastery for views of the wide, sandy valley and then walk to the statue platform for panoramic photos and a peaceful atmosphere. The combination of desert-like dunes, green oases, and snow peaks seen from Diskit makes Nubra look completely different from the Indus valley around Leh.
About this place
History & highlights
Diskit Monastery, belonging to the Gelugpa order, dates back to the 14th century, making it one of the oldest monasteries in the Nubra region. It grew as a religious centre on trade routes connecting Leh with Central Asia via the Karakoram. The large Maitreya statue is a recent addition (early 21st century), built with local and international donations to promote peace and protect the region. Nubra’s history is strongly tied to caravan traffic and border geography; today Diskit symbolises the meeting of that old trade world with new tourism.
