Pahari Mandir (Shiv Temple on Hill)

About this place

Pahari Mandir is one of Ranchi’s most sacred landmarks, perched atop a steep hill right in the middle of the city. Devotees climb a long flight of steps (or take the road) to reach the temple, from where there is a wide panoramic view of Ranchi’s houses, offices and greenery. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and during Shravan and Mahashivratri the hill fills with pilgrims, bells and chants. The tricolour flag hoisted here adds a patriotic touch to the religious atmosphere.

History & highlights

The hill has been revered locally for a long time, but the present temple structure gained prominence in the 20th century. During the freedom struggle and early decades after Independence, the spot also acquired patriotic importance, and the regular hoisting of the national flag on Independence Day and Republic Day became a tradition. Over time, the temple was renovated, the stairways improved, and Pahari Mandir evolved into both a major Shiva shrine and a symbolic “viewpoint of Ranchi,” representing the city’s blend of devotion and civic pride.
