Rajmahal Hills

About this place

Just outside Sahibganj, the Rajmahal Hills rise in a series of low, forested ridges. Viewpoints and small villages offer good looks over the Ganga plains and winding river. Scattered through the hills and the nearby town of Rajmahal are old mosques, ruins, gateways and graveyards, remnants of a time when the area briefly served as a Mughal sub-capital. For visitors, combining hill drives with ruin-spotting and river views creates a unique historical landscape experience.

History & highlights

In the 16th–17th centuries, the Rajmahal area briefly served as a capital or sub-capital of Bengal under the Mughals, who called it Akbarnagar at one point. Fortifications, mosques and palaces were built, though many later fell into ruin as the capital shifted again downstream. The surrounding hills also hold geological importance due to ancient rock formations. Over time, with the decline of river-based imperial centres, the region became quieter, but its layered history still shows in the ruins and hill settlements that now fall within Sahibganj district’s tourism circuit.
