Chamundeshwari Temple,Sitting on top of Chamundi Hill, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, the tutelary deity of Mysuru. A tall gopuram, long staircase and viewpoints over the city make the visit both spiritual and scenic. Devotees offer puja, circumambulate the shrine and often visit the giant Nandi statue halfway up the hill.
About this place
History & highlights
The hill has been sacred since ancient times, associated with the legend of the Goddess slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura (linked to the name Mysore). The present temple complex evolved over centuries under the Wodeyar kings, who were ardent devotees of Chamundeshwari and credited her with protecting their kingdom. They made major donations, festivals and architectural additions. The temple thus represents both an old Shakti tradition and the royal Mysore–Chamundi connection that shaped the city’s religious identity.
