Om Beach and Gokarna Beaches,Om Beach, named for its natural “ॐ”-like curve, is a popular rocky-sandy beach a short drive from the town. For most of its history, Gokarna’s beaches were mainly used by fishing communities and local residents. Only from the late 20th century did they attract backpackers, foreign travellers and then Indian tourists. Simple huts and cafés grew into more organised stays. Today, Om Beach’s history is one of rapid transformation from a working coastal stretch to a hippie-style and family holiday destination, still anchored by the traditional temple town nearby.
