Chitradurga Fort

Chitradurga Fort

About this place

Chitradurga Fort sprawls over rocky hills with multiple concentric walls, gateways, bastions and secret passages. The boulders and walls blend so well that the fort seems to grow out of the rock itself. Inside are temples, granaries, water tanks and viewpoints, while stories of local heroes and legends (like Onake Obavva) are narrated by guides, making it both a scenic and storytelling-rich site.

History & highlights

The fort area saw occupation from early times but became prominent under the Nayakas of Chitradurga (17th–18th centuries), feudatories who later became semi-independent from the Vijayanagara Empire. They expanded the fort into a formidable hill stronghold. In the late 18th century, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan fought to take Chitradurga, and after Mysore came under British, the fort lost military importance. Today it stands as a classic example of a rocky hill fort of Karnataka, central to Chitradurga’s identity.
