History & highlights

Karwar has been an important port town since at least the medieval period, used by local rulers, Portuguese, Marathas and later the British for trade in spices, timber and other goods. Rabindranath Tagore visited Karwar as a young man and later wrote warmly of its beauty. In the 20th century, the port and later a naval base shaped its economy. The beachfront’s development as “Tagore Beach” reflects a modern effort to build tourism around this long-standing maritime town.
