About this place
History & highlights
Guruvayur’s antiquity is linked to legends of the idol being brought from Dwaraka, but historically the temple rose to prominence under the Zamorin of Calicut and Travancore/Cochin royals, who patronised it over several centuries. It survived difficult periods, including attacks during regional conflicts, and later benefited from modern rail and road connectivity. In the 20th century, pilgrim numbers exploded, and Guruvayur became known as the “Dwaraka of the South,” making it central to Kerala’s Vaishnavite devotional history.
